Lodewijk Van Berquen

According to an old myth, Lodewijk Van Berquen, a goldsmith from Bruges, was the inventor of the scaif.  This was a device that used a rotating disc covered with diamond powder and olive oil to polish diamonds. This new polishing technique revolutionized the trade, and allowed diamonds to be facetted.
